Patrick Foth Named 2005 showrider.com Equitation Cup
Year End High Point Champion!

Year-end awards for the showrider.com Equitation Cup were handed out Friday November 19 at the Double Tree Hotel in Novi, Michigan.  Patrick Foth of Sterling Heights, Michigan was named Year-End High Point Champion and chose the $1,000.00 gift certificate to The Franklin Saddler Tack Shop, rather than the brand new saddle, as his prize.  The biggest surprise during the showrider.com presentations came when Showrider Inc. president and showrider.com Equitation Cup class creator, Christopher Ewing, announced that points had been secretly tracked all season in order to name a High Point Trainer Award winner.  "I planned on introducing a  High Point Trainer Award beginning next season, but so many trainers participated in the event this past season that I decided to start it sooner.  It's great that everyone likes the class and that it has been so well received," says Ewing.

The 2005 showrider.com Equitation Cup High Point Trainer is Steve Hawkins (ironically, the trainer of Foth). For being the High Point Trainer, Hawkins wins a round-trip plane ticket to Tampa, Florida  Enchantment of the Seaswhere he will meet up with a Royal Caribbean ship that will take him on a 5-day cruise of the western Caribbean.  The showrider.com Equitation Cup High Point Trainer Award is an annual award presented to the trainer whose total number of students earn the most points in the showrider.com Equitation Cup class during the season.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

CLASS SPECIFICATIONS

The Show Rider.com Equitation Cup is a new equitation class for Junior riders 17 years of age or younger and it is designed for riders to showcase their overall, well-rounded horsemanship skills. Open to any Junior rider who has never competed in a National Equitation Final with fences at 3'6" (i.e.; USEF Medal; ASPCA Maclay; USET; CET or CEF Finals; WIHS, etc.).

First Round
In the first round, each rider will compete over a course entirely of their own design. The course will include a minimum of eight fences not to exceed 3' in height, with spreads not to exceed fence height. The course may be either a Jumper or Hunter type course and must include at least two changes of direction and a combination. Water obstacles (i.e.; water jump, liverpool, etc.) are not permitted. Each jump on the course will be able to be jumped in either direction and each jump can be jumped twice,  once in either direction. If a rider has a knockdown in one direction, that jump may not be jumped again in the opposite direction.  A course sheet displaying the placement of the jumps will be posted at least 1 hour before the start of the class and riders and their trainers will be permitted to walk the course prior to the start of the class.  Each rider must jump a minimum of 8 jumps and no more than 12 (in & outs are considered as one obstacle and may not be jumped separately, however faults incurred at each obstacle of an in & out are scored separately). Riders who fail to jump the minimum number of obstacles required will be disqualified.

An Open Numerical Scoring System will be used with each rider's score announced at the completion of their first round. Higher points will be award to the rider whose first round displays the greatest level of creativity & execution. The top four riders after the first round will be called back for the Testing Phase.

The Testing Phase
The Testing Phase will consist of a flat work demonstration entirely of the rider’s choice. Each of the top 4 riders will be called back to test in reverse order. They will enter the ring, one at a time, and upon an audible signal, they must salute the judge (to salute the judge, the rider should hold the reins in their left hand, bow their head and wave their right hand over their right knee simultaneously) and then begin their flat work demonstration. Their flat work must be no less than 60 seconds long and no longer than 90 seconds in length.  At the 60 second point an audible signal will sound letting the rider know that they have reached the minimum required time and the rider may continue to ride for an additional 30 seconds if they choose.  Once  the rider has reached the 90 second limit a second audible signal will sound and at that point the rider must halt facing the judge, salute and leave the ring.

Each rider's demonstration must include a walk, posting trot, and canter, in both directions. Riders may incorporate any additional demonstrations, (simple or flying changes of lead, halt, back, leg yield, work without stirrups, etc) at their own discretion. Riders who fail to execute the required gaits or movements will receive a deduction of points from their score in the flat phase at the judges discretion.  Higher points will be award to the rider whose test shows the highest level of creativity and execution of movements. If the rider completes their flat phase before the 90 second audible signal, the rider should halt in the middle of the ring facing the judge and salute the judge to signify that their test is completed.

Awards
The first place finisher receives an engraved silver cup trophy.  Ribbons will be presented to 6th place. The names of all ribbon winning riders (1st thru 6th) will be listed on the showrider.com web site along with the points they earned, based on the following: 1st place - 10 points, 2nd - 6 points, 3rd - 4 points, 4th - 2 points, 5th - 1 point, 6th - 1/2 point.  The showrider.com Equitation Cup show jumping season is from October 1 through the following September 30.

YEAR END HIGH POINT WINNER AWARD

The rider who wins the highest number of points by the end of the season will win
a brand new saddle OR a $1,000.00 gift certificate to

Year End High Point Awards will be presented to the top 6 riders
with the highest number of points from throughout the season.

Dear Mr. Ewing,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for sponsoring the Showrider.com Equitation Cup at the Stoney Ridge Farm 'B' Finals this past weekend.  Even though I am currently unable to ride my horse due to several recent back surgeries, I had the wonderful pleasure of watching a terrific junior from my barn show my mare and finish 3rd in the class.  You have no idea how proud I was to see her compete against the top riders in the area and finish so well.

The opportunity that you have given these young riders to showcase their hard work is wonderful.  I hope to make a full recovery and return to the show ring, and look forward to an adult version of this class!

Again, thank you so much for your support of riders, young and old.

Sincerely,

Heather Hoffman
